AAWA-OC Welcome Meeting Event Report
Submitted by Dr. Jackie Conley, President & Founder

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the Asian American Women Association of Orange County (AAWA-OC) proudly hosted its first official Welcome Meeting for members and volunteers at 10501 West Garden Grove Blvd, Garden Grove, CA 92843. The event ran from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and was attended by over 30 individuals, including board members, advisory board members, new members, and enthusiastic volunteers.

The morning began at 9:00 AM with board members arriving early to clean and prepare the venue. The AAWA-OC backdrop was hung with pride, the projector and laptop were set up, and four tables with fifty chairs were arranged as planned. The check-in table was organized with laptops, name tags, and handouts to greet attendees efficiently. Refreshments—homemade vegetarian glass noodles by Ms. Phuong Lan Le, Vietnamese sandwiches, tea, coffee, and fresh juice—were elegantly displayed to welcome our guests.

At 10:06 AM, member Elizabeth La warmly welcomed attendees and introduced Dr. Jackie Conley, AAWA-OC’s Founder and President. Dr. Conley’s opening remarks highlighted the rapid growth and accomplishments of the association, emphasizing the mission to uplift, empower, and serve Asian American women and families through education, health services, civic engagement, and cultural preservation. She unveiled the 2025–2026 Strategic Plan and introduced seven key committees, inviting all attendees to participate actively.

Treasurer Cherrie Uy then energized the room with a lively icebreaker activity. She was enthusiastically supported by Vice President Dr. Hang Pham and Vice President Attorney Tracy Nguyen. The activity set the tone for a day of camaraderie and connection. Board members Dr. Hue Pham and Dr. Thanh Tam Nguyen participated actively, helping to create a joyful, engaging atmosphere.

Everyone introduced themselves, fostering a warm sense of community. Dr. Conley presented AAWA-OC’s strategic goals, focusing on the power of volunteerism and committee collaboration. After the presentation, members took a brief break to enjoy refreshments. The room buzzed with connection as attendees visited seven designated committee stations to learn more and sign up.

Dr. Cynthia Phong, DDS, addressed the group with a powerful message about empowering youth who live with chronic pain and introduced her website: https://mychyp.org. Dr. Thanh Tam Nguyen highlighted mental health awareness and emphasized continued community outreach. Dr. Hue Pham spoke passionately about the vital importance of education and advocacy.

Dr. Hang Pham, Attorney Tracy Nguyen, and Treasurer Cherrie Uy also actively presented their views during the meeting, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening the association and supporting its mission.

The event continued with an open Q&A session where attendees asked thoughtful questions about upcoming initiatives. Certificates of attendance were presented to all participants. Dr. Quynh Kieu offered insights about the Project Vietnam Foundation’s collaboration with UCI and invited everyone to the PVF lunch event on the first floor. Dr. Conley also introduced Ms. Nina Linh, District CA-40 Assembly candidate and strong supporter of AAWA-OC, who shared her story and advocacy journey.

Before adjourning, Dr. Conley shared several exciting upcoming events:

Thursday, August 28: AAWA-OC will celebrate monthly birthdays with residents at Westminster Villa Assisted Living, beginning at 2:00 PM.
Sunday, October 5: AAWA-OC Fall Community Health Fair will take place at St. Cecilia Church in Tustin from 9:00 AM–3:00 PM, with chiropractic services and health screenings.
Saturday, November 22 (tentative): AAWA-OC’s first Fundraising Gala.

Date: May 17, 2025
Organized by: Asian American Women Association of Orange County (AAWA-OC) with La Quinta High School volunteers

Asian American Women Association of Orange County celebrated Mother’s Day by visiting two senior living facilities: Brookdale Senior Living and Westminster Villa. At Brookdale, residents aged 67 to 96 engaged in paper flower-making and sing-alongs led by Board Secretary Elizabeth La, despite mobility and vision challenges. Refreshments were shared, and photos were taken to create keepsakes.

At Westminster Villa, the team faced more physical and cognitive challenges among residents but fostered an uplifting atmosphere with music, personalized song requests, and paper flower crafts made by volunteers. Dr. Jackie’s emotional rendition of a traditional Vietnamese song deeply moved the audience.

The event was made possible through the collective efforts of AAWA-OC members, student volunteers, a photographer, and Elizabeth La. The visits fostered intergenerational connections and joy, embodying AAWA-OC’s mission to honor and uplift elders.
